City Response to March 22, 2024, Snow Event -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(March 22, 2024 – 3:45p.m.)

The City of Cedar Rapids has set the end of the March 22, 2024 snow event at 4:00p.m.

Several items of note from today’s weather:

  • Street crews transitioned from primary routes to move into residential plowing by 2:30p.m. today and will remain engaged with the effort to plow all streets until they are complete. They are currently on 24-hour operations until finished. Application of salt today will assist with reducing buildup from possible successive weather this weekend.
  • Solid Waste continued garbage and recycling pickup, but moved Yardy pickup normally scheduled for today to Monday, March 25, 2024.
  • CRPD reports 67 vehicle accidents and 33 vehicle hazards (stuck, disabled or immobile vehicles) related to this morning’s weather.
  • CRFD responded to two of those accidents for injuries – none were serious.

Snow Event Ending at 4:00p.m. on Friday, March 22.

Snow Event end times are posted in accordance with Municipal Code Chapter 9.11 — Clearing Snow and Ice From Sidewalks.

  • To help property owners better understand the enforcement timelines and foster operational transparency, the City publishes an official end time for snow events pursuant to Chapter 9.11 Code. The time is posted to the City’s website at CityofCR.com/Snow and distributed through CR News Now alerts and social media.
  • Chapter 9.11 provides property owners with 24 hours after snow has fallen or ice has formed to remove snow and ice from the public sidewalk and curb ramps adjacent to their property.
  • Each event is treated differently based on the factors of the storm, such as wind.
  • If a new snow event starts during the 24-hour clock, the countdown stops for that storm and a new clock begins after the new snow event ends.
  • The Snow Event end time will be 4:00p.m. on March 22, 2024, giving property owners 24 hours from to clear snow and ice from sidewalks.

One of our City priorities is to ensure all residents have access to basic needs. In light of this, keeping sidewalks and sidewalk ramps safe and clear of snow is critical to public safety and accessibility so residents can access sidewalks, bus stops, and routes to businesses. It is important to provide a safe, walkable community for all residents, regardless of age and ability. Concerns regarding sidewalks can be submitted starting at 4:00p.m. on Saturday, March 21, through My CR —  CityofCR.com/MyCR.

Thanks for doing your part to keep our community safe and accessible.

Garbage, Recycling, and Yard Waste Updates

  • Garbage and Recycling collection continued on the SE routes today. YARDY cart collection has been postponed until Monday, March 25.

Safe Driving Tips
Help keep yourself and our crews safe with these tips for winter driving:

  • Reduce your speeds.
  • Use caution in turns.
  • Avoid sudden moves.
  • Accelerate and brake carefully and slowly.
  • Leave more room between vehicles.
  • Increase your braking distance.
