Discharge of Fireworks Prohibited in Cedar Rapids City Limits

June 17, 2021

The City of Cedar Rapids reminds citizens the use of fireworks within the city limits of Cedar Rapids is prohibited.

Not only are fireworks illegal to discharge in the city limits, they can be dangerous for users, as well as people and property nearby.  In 2020, there were 3 fireworks injuries reported at local hospitals.  In addition, there were four fire incidents caused by fireworks.

Please respect your neighbors, families with young children and pets, veterans with stress disorders, and others sensitive to loud noises by not illegally discharging fireworks in the city limits.

Cedar Rapids Police officers will cite individuals who are caught illegally discharging fireworks.  The violation requires a court appearance with a fine up to $855.

Although the discharge of fireworks in Cedar Rapids is prohibited, you may consider going to a family or friend’s home where fireworks are allowed.  For example, fireworks are allowed to be discharged on July 4 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. in the unincorporated areas of Linn County.  However, fireworks may only be used on the property owned by the person or persons using the fireworks, or with the property owner’s permission.

One of the safest ways to enjoy fireworks is to attend a professional public display by a certified pyrotechnician who has obtained necessary safety permits issued by the Fire Department and City of Cedar Rapids.

The Fire Department would also like to remind citizens that sky lanterns, which are small hot air balloons made of paper, with an opening at the bottom where a small fire is suspended, are legal only if they are tethered.  It is illegal to allow a sky lantern to be set free into the air without a tether to retrieve it.
