1870-1890: In 1870, only small residential houses stood on this block of First Avenue SE. By 1883, three significant buildings had been constructed here: the three story Waterhouse Block at the corner of First Avenue and Third Street SE in 1882, a two story structure for the Blachley music store at 313-317 First Avenue SE in 1878 and the elegant three story Northwestern Hotel at the corner of First Avenue and the Fourth Street railroad tracks. By 1890, the Northwestern had been renamed The Clifton Hotel.
