1973-1990: The famous and well-loved Bishop’s Cafeteria closed in January 1981 after more than 50 years in the ground level of the old Allison Hotel. (NS)Urban renewal projects took their toll on this block. In 1973, two buildings that stood between the Iowa Theatre and the Allison Hotel were demolished, including one that housed the popular “Tender Trap” lounge for many years in the 1960’. In 1983, the Allison Hotel was closed early in the year, displacing many low income residents. In June, the entire Allison Hotel building was torn down to create a new parking lot.
