1905-1920: In 1914, work began on another new five story “fireproof” hotel at the corner of Second Avenue SE at the railroad tracks. This was right across the alley from the 1905 Allison Hotel. The new hotel at 324 Second Avenue SE was named The Magnus after the Cedar Rapids family primarily known for their large brewery operation near Cedar Lake that had begun in the 1860’s. When the Magnus Hotel was completed in 1915, local Prohibition was about to be established in Cedar Rapids.
