1905-1920: After the debut of silent films in the first decade of the 20th century, going to the “movies” became incredibly popular and after 1910, several movie theatres were built in Cedar Rapids. One of the earliest was the opening of the Palace Theatre at 310 Second Avenue SE in 1912 next to the Cedar Rapids National Bank building. Early film lovers flocked to the Palace to see Hollywood’s earliest silent feature films as well as newsreels, cartoons and short films.
