1905-1920: This was the time of the most rapid development along this block of Third Street SE. Next door to the CSPS Hall, a fine brick City Fire Station, Hose Company No. 4, was built in 1915 and opened the following year. At the “NW” corner of 12th Avenue and 3rd St. SE. a two story brick retail store building went up in 1905 and about a year later, the sidewalk level was converted into the home of the Iowa State Savings Bank. In order to make the building appear more “bank like”, a single granite column was added to the corner of the building and bars were placed over the windows to ensure security for new bank customers. Next door to the new bank, a small one story structure went up 1910 for the Parlor City grocery store. When Iowa State Savings Bank moved to a much larger bank building across 12th avenue SE in 1917, the old bank and 1910 structure became one larger grocery store for the Globe Grocery Company.
