One Water

The Cedar Rapids Community Water Academy takes a "One Water" approach. "One Water" means we take all of the water in our community into consideration with water management, knowing that all forms of water are equally important in the water cycle. This means drinking water, stormwater, wastewater, source water, industrial water, watersheds, and all water quality efforts. All water has value and is critical to life, and we use the full water cycle: Our water flows down to us from upstream, and we pull our drinking water from a source. This water is treated for drinking, is used and discarded, is treated again as wastewater, is expelled, and flows downstream, where another community starts the process all over again. Contributing to the process is stormwater that runs off yards and streets into storm drains, as well as all water in the watershed that runs off and flows from many sources, including farm fields. All water has value, and we work together to provide the best water quality we can. We believe that everyone is entitled to clean and safe water. The Community Water Academy will explore all aspects of water in the Cedar Rapids community, and we will look at why the "One Water" approach is so important.
