Rental Services

The Cedar Rapids City Council recently approved a new program to ensure that properties within the city limits are well maintained and are not used for unlawful conduct or conduct that disturbs the peaceable use of surrounding properties. The program applies to rental, owner-occupied residential, commercial and industrial properties, including individual rental units. The goal is to make our neighborhoods safer and preserve property values for all property owners.

A nuisance property is defined as a property within Cedar Rapids city limits where City personnel and police officers have conducted multiple service calls to clean up debris, investigate illegal activity or impose corrective action for noncompliance with City ordinances. Owners of nuisance properties will be held accountable for these nuisances. They will be required to address, eliminate, abate or remove the nuisance condition or charged fees to meet the requirements.

In conjunction with this new program, changes are being made to the current housing code registration program. These changes will include a requirement for rental property owners to perform background checks on potential tenants. Landlords will also be required to take part in a training program sponsored by various City departments.
