History
Golf course construction was started in early 1966 and opened the spring of 1968 under the design of Herman Thompson. This 18-hole championship Cedar Rapids golf course offers golfers a wide variety of holes. Our Cedar Rapids golf course is very challenging for the advanced player offering length, hazards, and trees. Yet, it is still very enjoyable to play for those of average ability. The location, just outside of Marion and next to Wanatee Park provides the course with a beautiful setting with golfers often seeing white tail deer, fox, possum and other wildlife. Gardner is the perfect golf course for your next golf outing or family reunion!
On September 8, 1999, the City Council of the City of Cedar Rapids renamed Squaw Creek Golf Course to the Donald K. Gardner Golf Course in memory of the former Parks and Public Property Commissioner. Donald K. Gardner served the Cedar Rapids Parks Department from 1944 to 1969 and was appointed to complete the term as Commissioner of Parks and Public Property in 1956 and continued that position for 13 years.
