Greene Square Becomes Alcohol Free on Saturday

July 11, 2018

On Tuesday, July 10, Cedar Rapids City Council amended the Cedar Rapids Municipal Code to prohibit alcohol at Greene Square, 400 4th Avenue SE. Enforcement will begin on Saturday, July 14. No one in the park will be allowed to bring, use, consume, or possess alcohol, wine or beer.

Greene Square was added to the 27 other parks in the city park system that do not allow anyone to bring, consume, dispense, or have in his or her possession alcohol, wine, or beer in the park.   The list of parks where alcohol is prohibited is listed in Cedar Rapids Municipal Code 10.03 Park Rules.  The Municipal Code is accessible through the City’s website at www.cedar-rapids.org.

The ordinance allows groups to apply for a permit to have alcohol in Greene Square for special events.  The group must have a permit issued by the City Council or City Manager and they must meet any other applicable state law or city code requirements.  The permittee must be present while the alcohol, wine, or beer is consumed, dispensed or possessed in Green Square and the permittee is responsible to ensure that no alcohol, wine, or beer is consumed, dispensed or possessed by any person under the legal age.
