Celebrate Earth Week with the City of Cedar Rapids

April 17, 2023

The City of Cedar Rapids will celebrate Earth Week April 22-28. Join us at EcoFest, our City Manager's 1-Bag Challenge litter pickup event, and an Arbor Day school tree planting. Earth Week encourages us all to increase our awareness and understanding of our world and of the City's community climate goals and initiatives.

EcoFest will be held at NewBo City Market (1100 3rd Street) on Saturday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The City will have tables where visitors can commit to sustainable actions, enter to win a tree, receive giveaway items, and learn more about the City's Community Climate Action Plan with goals toward becoming carbon-free and more resilient. Cedar Rapids Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell and City Manager Jeff Pomeranz will announce Rain Art finalists GreenCR Champions over the Noon hour.

The City Manager's 1-Bag Challenge litter pickup event will be held at McGrath Amphitheater (475 1st Street SW) on Monday, April 24, from 4-6 p.m. Water, snacks, and giveaway items will be provided, along with litter kits. Following brief remarks and a group photo, participants will be encouraged to pick up litter together. Dress for the outdoors, and wear comfortable shoes!

For Arbor Day, on Friday, April 28, at 9:15 a.m., the Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department will observe the day by planting trees with students at Kenwood Leadership Academy (3700 E Avenue NE). Mayor O'Donnell will read the Arbor Day proclamation, followed by teaching modules for the students, led by Cedar Rapids Forestry and Linn County Conservation staff. One of the modules will involve planting trees at the school.
