Tree and Brush Removal Following Storms

July 6, 2022

The City of Cedar Rapids has taken reports of tree damage and debris following recent storms. Residents may report a City right-of-way tree blocking a street or driveway by calling (319) 286-5747 or submitting a concern through the My CR platform at CityofCR.com/MyCR. Navigate to Submit a Request > Trees > Storm Damage and fill out the form.

Residents with damage to trees located on private property are responsible for the removal of that debris. The City of Cedar Rapids’ Solid Waste & Recycling division accepts unlimited yard waste collection at curbside as long as it meets these requirements:

  • Limbs are 5 inches or less in diameter
  • Debris is put into the YARDY cart first, then excess debris is bundled and set next to the cart
  • YARDY cart lid must be closed for collection
  • Bundles must be 2ft.x3ft. in size and weigh less than 40 pounds each
  • Bundles are held together with biodegradable twine

In addition, tree debris can be taken to the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency A Street location. Instructions and costs are available online at SolidWasteAgency.org/compost-yard-waste/cost-location.

Residents and property owners who require assistance with vegetative debris removal from recent storms that is larger than 5 inches in diameter may request help from the City by following these steps:

  1. Whenever possible, cut branches into sections <10’ long. Large trunks should be halved or quartered,
  2. Stack debris in the City right-of-way between the street and sidewalk,
  3. Report the location of the debris requiring pickup: contact the City by calling (319) 286-5747 or submitting a concern through the My CR platform at CityofCR.com/MyCR. Navigate to Submit a Request > Trees > Storm Damage and fill out the form.

The City cannot enter private property to collect tree debris. This is not a 2020 Derecho debris collection program; assistance is intended only for debris caused by the recent storms. The deadline to report vegetative debris for collection is Noon on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Non-organic debris will not be collected curbside. To schedule a collection for bulky items, contact the Cedar Rapids Solid Waste & Recycling division at (319) 286-5897.
