Four Cedar Rapids Pools to Open Saturday

June 1, 2022

Following months of diligent recruiting efforts by City staff to combat a lifeguard shortage, the City of Cedar Rapids is excited to announce that four municipal pools will open on Saturday, June 4. This is a substantial accomplishment as pool operations in many cities across the country have been scaled back due to the nationwide shortage. Cedar Rapids has not operated more than three pools since 2019. Cherry Hill Aquatic Center and Bever, Ellis, and Jones Pools will open with schedules for lap swims and open swims posted on the City’s website at CityofCR.org. Bender Indoor Pool is also open.

Noelridge Aquatic Center will not open until mid-June or later due to a mechanical issue with the pool’s heating system. The water temperature is currently 65 degrees. The part required to repair the heater is not available until the middle of June at the earliest. If weather temperatures are hot, the pool could open before then, however temperatures must stay warm and cannot drop during the evening hours to get the water to a usable temperature.

The first session of Noelridge’s swim lessons have been moved to Ellis Pool. To accommodate lessons, Ellis will close at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and not reopen for an evening swim. However, the open swim on Saturday has been extended to 8:00 p.m.
