Cedar Rapids to Hold Vigil For Community Healing on Wednesday

April 12, 2022

CEDAR RAPIDS – April 12, 2022 – The City of Cedar Rapids will hold a Vigil for Community Healing on Wednesday, April 13, at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 50 2nd Avenue Bridge. The vigil is a moment to bring the community together — while honoring the victims, their families, and friends — and support healing for our city.

“Sadly, it’s often a tragedy like last weekend that helps us realize we can’t walk through this world alone. It can be helpful to be around others who are processing similar emotions of shock, grief and — for some — generational trauma. Our community is stronger when we come together,” said Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell.

Community service organizations Foundation 2 and Waypoint will join the event to offer support and resources to those in need. Prayers and words of respect will be offered. Community members of any and all religious, spiritual and nonspiritual traditions; ethnicities, cultures and races; gender expression, LGBTQIA and gender-queer communities; and all levels of mental and physical ability are welcome and encouraged to attend.

The event will be held indoors due to the weather forecast. As a result, battery-operated vigil candles will be used and provided at the event.

Accommodations: Accessible parking is available on the 2nd Avenue Bridge. Additional parking is available in the May’s Island Parking Ramp, on the 3rd Avenue Bridge and along downtown side streets. American Sign Language interpretation will be available during the event. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in this event, should contact Kristin Clague at 319-286-5860 or email k.clague@cedar-rapids.org as soon as possible, but no later than 12 hours before the scheduled event. TTY users may also call 711 (Iowa Relay Service).
