Time to Register for National Night Out

June 29, 2023

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. National Night Out will be held on Tuesday, August 1, 2022. This will be the 40th anniversary for National Night Out and the 24th anniversary for Cedar Rapids to participate in National Night Out activities.

National Night Out is an opportunity to meet your neighbors and work collectively to prevent crime.   Neighbors who look out for one another and report suspicious activity truly make a difference in the community.  Our police officers look forward to meeting with residents and continuing to build relationships with the people we serve.

On Tuesday, August 1, neighbors throughout Cedar Rapids are asked to lock their doors, turn on their front porch lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors and law enforcement. Along with the traditional outside lights and front porch vigils, most cities celebrate National Night Out by hosting block parties, cookouts and various community events with safety demonstrations, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, and exhibits.

Neighbors have to come together, join forces, and take a stand against crime in their neighborhoods. National Night Out is a great way to reinforce the relationship with neighbors and local police officers. You can help prevent crime in the community by getting involved.

It is simple to host a National Night Out event. It can be done in three steps:

1.         Determine the location, time and refreshments.

2.         Go to National Night Out Registration to register and download an invitation that can be customized and sent to neighbors.

3.         Invite your neighbors and enjoy the night!

Your National Night Out event can be as simple as a potluck, cookout or dessert. One person can be responsible for the entire event or you can share the responsibility. But make sure to register! Cedar Rapids Police officers will stop at each event throughout the community.

To get more information on how to host an event or to register your event so that police officers can stop by and meet your neighbors, please visit www.cedar-rapids.org/police or contact Sergeant Jen Roberts at (319) 286-5433.  Please email Sergeant Roberts the following information if you would like to participate:  National Night Out event contact person, address, email, neighborhood association name (if applicable), location, hours of the event/activity, police officers/firefighters requested at the event, and indicate whether media can attend your event to j.roberts@cedar-rapids.org.
