Urban Deer Hunt - September 16, 2021 to January 10, 2024

The City of Cedar Rapids will continue its annual Urban Deer Hunt for the 2023-2024 season as authorized by City Council Resolution # 0762-09-07.  The Urban Deer Hunt is scheduled for September 16, 2023 through January 10, 2024.  Battalion Chief Jason Andrews, program manager, will issue hunting permits upon completion of the following:

  • Completion of the Iowa Bow Hunter’s Safety Course. (one-time only)
  • Completion of an Urban Deer Management application available at Palo Outdoors/Lewis Access Outfitters or on the City’s website
  • Complete an annual proficiency certification test at Palo Outdoors/Lewis Access Outfitters, 1204 1st Street, Palo.
    • Testing will be allowed beginning Wednesday July 17, 2023
  • Mandatory attendance at the Urban Deer Hunt Rules and Regulations Class (only one
    class required) at Palo Outdoors/Lewis Access Outfitters, 1204 1st Street, Palo. 
    • Sunday, August 27th – 11:00AM
    • Monday, September 11th – 6:00PM

Hunting permits will be issued at the end of the Urban Deer Hunt Rules and Regulations class, provided all items have been completed.  For complete information, visit the City’s website.

      The City’s Urban Deer Hunting program is a collaborative effort that maintains a healthy, manageable herd of deer in the City limits.  It promotes physical health of the deer population and mitigates risk factors related to the presence of deer in urban areas and roadsides.
