Linn County Crime Stoppers has received a donation of $7,600 to be awarded for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Malik Sheets.  Friends and family of Malik Sheets established a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to help solve this crime and hold the offender or offenders accountable. The campaign started with an “In Memory of Malik Sheets” Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/607871263169026).

The $7,600 reward is in addition to up to $2,500 offered through Linn County Crime Stoppers for the arrest and conviction of person or persons responsible for the murder. Sheets was killed on Thursday, June 18, 2020.

The victim in the Thursday, June 18 homicide has been identified as Malik James Sheets, DOB/12-09-1999, age 20.

On Thursday, June 18 at 5:09 a.m. the City’s Joint Communications Agency received a report of a fight and shots fired inside a residence in the 1000 block of Regent Street NE.  Dispatchers were also advised that there was a victim who had sustained a gunshot wound. 

Officers arrived on scene to find a 20-year old male inside the residence who had sustained at least one gunshot wound to the upper body.  Police officers, firefighters, and Area Ambulance Service personnel administered emergency medical care and transported the victim to UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital. 

Shortly thereafter, the victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital.  

Based on the preliminary investigation, there appears to have been a large party inside the residence, an argument ensued, and shots were fired.  The shooting appears to be a targeted incident.

There is an active, ongoing homicide investigation.
