Fire Department Safety Scoop Presentation Update

Fire Department Safety Scoop Presentation Update

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department offers a monthly presentation of safety topics of interest to older adults.  The Fire Department hopes to connect older adults with available community resources.  Many of the topics will be presented in partnership with other organizations such as AARP, Area Substance Abuse Council, Cedar Rapids Police Department, and Linn County TRIAD, to reduce older adults’ vulnerability to fire, injury, or crime.

Due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, the Fire Department has not been able to host the event at the Central Fire Station.  Therefore, the Public Education Division has developed an innovative way to bring the presentations to the community.  For each of the upcoming topics, there will a virtual Safety Scoop with the video uploaded on the Fire Department’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cedarrapidsfiredepartment.  The video will be uploaded in the morning on the following dates with these topics:

  • June 24 - Financial Exploitation
  • July 22 - Managing the Medicare Maze
  • August 26 - Basic Legal Planning for End-of-Life
  • September 23 - What's Available for Adults in Cedar Rapids
  • October 28 - Update on Local Senior Center
  • November 25 - 55+ Initiative - Matching Adults to Volunteer Opportunities
  • December 23 - Coping for the Holidays

The Fire Department will host the Safety Scoop at the Central Fire Station again when participants can safely do so in accordance with public health guidelines.  In the meantime, the Fire Department encourages the public to view each topic on our Facebook page.  Each Safety Scoop video will conclude with a tour of the Central Fire Station.
