Progress continues on Mount Vernon Road's south half, between 17th and 20th Streets. Recent work includes pavement removals, storm sewer installation, utility relocations, and removal of the retaining wall along Oak Hill cemetery.

Next two weeks:

Expect curb and gutter installation, pavement patching, and foundation installation for the new traffic signal at 19th Street.

Traffic impacts:

East- and west-bound traffic continue to run in the north lanes while the south lanes are closed.
All businesses are open.

Temporary lane reduction on Tuesday, April 30:

The following work will start at 3 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, and is scheduled to finish by the end of the same day.
Contractors will conduct "potholing" to locate a water main in the north lanes between 20th Street and Knollwood Drive. While unrelated to the Mount Vernon Road project, it is being coordinated with the project.
Traffic will be rerouted to the south lanes in this section during the work.

2023 Improvements

Project Background

Planning for the improvements to Mount Vernon Road SE began in 2016 with the launch of public outreach for the Mount Vernon Road Corridor Action Plan. Through that planning process, significant public input was received related to the Mount Vernon Road corridor. The plan was adopted by City Council in 2017 with priority action items including improving aesthetics, reducing visual clutter, improving traffic safety, and increasing walkability. The proposed construction project was developed in accordance with these goals.

Planned Improvements

The Mount Vernon Road project stretches from 14th Street to 20th Street and includes: pavement widening; raised medians with aesthetic improvements; new sidewalk and existing sidewalk repairs; an asphalt overlay; utility improvements; traffic signal upgrades; and traffic safety improvements to the intersections at 15th and 19th Streets. This two-season project began construction in 2023. The stretch from 14th Street to 17th Street was complete in Fall 2023 and the stretch from 17th Street to 20th Street is expected to be complete in Fall 2024.
