FAQ SHEET - Working in the Right-of-Way
I am the property owner - do I submit a request to work in the city right-of-way?
- If using a contractor: No, you do not need to submit a request. Your contractor submits the documentation.
- If doing the work yourself (not using a contractor): Yes, you do need to submit a permit request and the supporting documentation.
What do I need to submit with my request to work in the right-of-way?
- If using a contractor: You do not need to submit anything; your contractor is responsible for filling the appropriate paperwork with the City.
- If doing the work yourself (not using a contractor): Your permit application needs to include a site map and certification of insurance for the property address.
What is a site map?
The site map shows your property and outlines where the work is taking place (see driveway site map below) The City requires specific information be included on your site map, including:
- Location and length of sidewalk to be replaced or constructed.
- Location and length of utility service to be replaced or constructed.
- Location of tree, stump or mailbox to be installed.

What is a DRIVEWAY SITE MAP?
The driveway site map shows your property and outlines where the work is taking place. The City requires specific information be included on your driveway site plan, including:
- Width of driveway and location at the sidewalk.
- Sidewalk bench location dimensions from property line.
- Flares and driveway approach location dimensions from the side property lines.
- Width of driveway opening at the street.

Are there guidelines on how I perform work in the city right-of-way and what material to use?
Yes, all work performed in the right of way needs to meet the City of Cedar Rapids standards and use materials that meet City standards. You may view these standards HERE.
