The Heights

About the Project

The Colonial Center building, located at 1500 2^nd Ave SE, was purchased by the City to be remodeled into 25 affordable housing units, 6 of which are fully ADA accessible, by leveraging 4 federal grants. This project is not only providing new affordable housing units, it is addressing a dilapidated structure at a key corner at 2^nd Avenue/15^th Street SE in the historic Wellington Heights Neighborhood. With the support of the Wellington Heights Neighborhood Association, the former Colonial building has been renamed “The Heights”.

• The building is in process of renovation and due to be completed in early 2024

Request for Proposal

The City of Cedar Rapids sought proposals for an entity to own and operate The Heights, to ensure compliance with federal guidelines, and long-term compliance for a 15-year affordability period. After completion of the request for proposal process, the City has selected Hawkeye Area Community Action Program  and will be negotiating a development agreement for the property disposition and long-term compliance requirements for this property.
