What is a Blue Zone?
Blue Zones are places in the world where people live measurably longer better. In these “Blue Zones” people reach age 100 at rates 10 times greater than in the United States. Researcher Dan Buettner and National Geographic teams identified nine lifestyle habits in the world's five Blue Zones that might explain longevity. These Power 9 lifestyle habits include physical activity, purposeful living, relaxation, portion control, plant-based diet, daily wine consumption, family time, faith community membership, and supportive friendships.

The Blue Zones Project® is a community-by-community movement to improve the well-being of Iowans. The project focuses on permanent environmental and policy changes that will make the healthy choice the easy choice. Learn more at

Cedar Rapids - a certified Blue Zones Community®
We want the citizens of Cedar Rapids to live happier, healthier, longer lives. Blue Zones Project - Cedar Rapids has inspired countless individuals to take steps toward a better quality of life and create a greater sense of well-being. Through individuals, organizations and policies, the culture is beginning to shift to support the community’s vision of becoming the City of Five Seasons – the fifth season representing time to enjoy the other four. That time can be found in the years of life gained through our status as a Blue Zones Community®.
