The Electrical Board of Appeals hears appeals for interpretations of the Electrical Code. The Board also considers the use of alternate materials and methods of construction for electrical work and makes recommendations to the City Council for improving the Electrical Code. 

The Board usually meets three to four times a year for 1½ to 2 hours.  The number of appeals filed will determine meeting frequency.


Application to Appeal 

Payment must be made when the appeal application is filed; each section violation is considered a separate appeal (effective April 1, 2003, by Resolution No. 0641-03-03):

  1. All types of uses or structures - $75.00
  2. Successive applications - $10.00

The Board shall consist of seven (7) members, all of whose place of business, residence or work shall be located within the corporate limits of the City of Cedar Rapids both at the time of appointment and during the term to which the member was appointed.  

All members of the Board shall be qualified by experience and training to pass judgment upon matters pertaining to electrical construction. Membership shall be comprised of two licensed electrical contractors, one licensed working electrician, one representative from a public service company furnishing electrical power to the City, one practicing electrical engineer capable of designing systems governed by this Code, a member of the Fire Department, a representative directly involved with electrical maintenance from a manufacturing plant, with no one company or interest being represented by more than one member of the Board.
