Board of Adjustment
Residents of Cedar Rapids have the right to appeal the Zoning Code requirements when proposed improvements to their property may not meet the requirements of the current zoning ordinance. Five citizens, appointed by the City Council, serve on the Board of Adjustment which hears these appeals, known as Major Design Exceptions or Variances.
The zoning ordinance lists specific criteria to grant a Major Design Exception or Variance, and each applicant must prove that all criteria are met to adjust or waive code requirements. The Board's decisions are based on information provided by the zoning staff, the petitioners, and the public.
Persons interested in serving on the Board may follow the steps found here to apply for a position.
Notice: If you are planning any improvement to your property, you should contact the Building/Zoning staff at 319-286-5836 for a review of the project. Should they determine that it will not meet requirements of the zoning ordinance, they will explain the appeal process.
