1920-1935: In the late 1920’s, the Bishop Cafeteria opened on the ground floor of the Allison Hotel building at 321 First Avenue SE. By the mid 1930’s, Bishop’s had become wildly popular with customers and hotel patrons. Food prices were extremely affordable and patrons only had to pay for what they chose from the cafeteria line. The Downtown Cedar Rapids Bishop’s was one of the first of what would become several Iowa locations for the celebrated cafeteria.
