St. Paul’s Methodist Episcopal Church formed in the early 1840s, making it the oldest congregation in Cedar Rapids. Its first church building, the Little Brick Church, was built from 1854-1856 and stood near today’s downtown Greene Square Park. A new building was constructed at the North-East corner of 4th Ave. and 5th St. SE in the early 1870s. St. Paul’s most enduring building, built from 1913-1914, was designed by renowned Chicago School architect Louis Sullivan, along with other Chicago and Prairie School architects George Elmslie and William C. Jones. An education wing designed by Cedar Rapids’ architects Brown and Healy was added in 1962-1963.
