Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Hotel

How many of you have spent the night in a Hotel or Motel with your family? What was it like? Did it have a swimming pool? A Jacuzzi? Fitness Center? A Video Game Room? Our Hotel doesn't have any of those things, but we do have a Stereoscope to view 3-D prints, a "necessary" Chair and a much more reasonable room rate than your parents probably paid for the room you stayed in.

This Hotel may seem small to you, but remember, this is small Iowa town at the turn of the century. The population of Ushers Ferry, Iowa is only 267 people-you wouldn't expect to have too many visitors at any one time. Notice the nearness to the Railroad Depot, the people would not have far to walk if they arrived by train. As you explore the Hotel today be sure to note the prices on the Wall near the Registration desk. These prices came from actual advertisements from the turn of the century. Do you know what "Board" is? That's the food you would eat. How would you like to sleep in the "Common Room" where you didn't know who would be sleeping in the bed next to you? You might get roomed with a really loud snorer-but the price was cheap!

On your visit upstairs you will find the "Necessary Chair" in the bathing room-you'll figure out what it is for. Finally, you may very carefully look through the stereoscope that is sitting on the dining room table.
