Traffic Signal Design, Operation & Maintenance:

The Traffic Engineering Division is responsible for the design, operation and maintenance of all traffic signals, pedestrian crossing signals, and warning flashers in Cedar Rapids.

Traffic Signal Location Map

The operation of approximately 140 traffic signals is managed using the software program, Advanced Control of Traffic Related Arterials (ACTRA). An extensive network of twisted-pair copper cable allows the software to communicate with traffic signals from a central location, where they can be effectively managed. The City is currently involved in a Joint Communications Network (JCN) project with Linn County and Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD) to upgrade and expand the limits of the communication cable to fiber optics. This project will connect all traffic signals within Cedar Rapids to the ACTRA system. Benefits realized include the ability to download traffic count data from the field, the possibility of more efficient “traffic responsive” operation, and development of an incident management program.
