"Pay-As-You-Throw" Garbage Program

How it Works

Your regular bi-monthly fee allows each household to put out one 35-gallon, 40-pound garbage can or garbage bag. If you recycle and reduce your waste at the source, you may have only one garbage can or garbage bag each week. If so, you pay no more than your regular bi-monthly fee.

If you have more than one 35-gallon, 40-pound garbage can or garbage bag, you must purchase a garbage sticker to place on your additional garbage. City workers will not collect any additional garbage cans or garbage bags that are not stickered.

Why it Works

It is a fair way to charge for the services of garbage collection and disposal. The resident who puts out more garbage pays more than those who put out less garbage. Unit-based pricing, also known as "pay-as-you-throw", makes the service of garbage collection and disposal more like a regular utility. When you use more water or electricity, you expect to pay more because you're using resources. Unit-based pricing encourages you to recycle and reduce your waste before you throw it away.
