City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa - Public Works Department: Sewer Maintenance Division

The sanitary sewer collection system includes over 3,014,927 l.f. (571 miles) of sanitary sewer and force mains, 12,700 manholes and six (6) lift stations. Pipe sizes range from 2-inch to 96-inch. The storm sewer system includes over 300 miles of storm sewer and 14,500 structures. A staff of 23 full- time employees has responsibility for operation and maintenance of the storm sewer and sanitary sewer collection systems. Responsibility for operation and maintenance of lift stations is under the Water Pollution Control Department.

Responsibilities of Sewer Maintenance related to sanitary sewer include:

Clean and clear obstructions in sanitary sewers

Televise sanitary sewers to determine condition of pipe or cause of blockages

Emergency repairs to manholes and sanitary sewer

Assist Water Pollution Control with flow monitoring activities

Minor construction or repair for other City departments

Maintenance or reconstruction of manholes or sanitary sewers

The Cedar Rapids sanitary sewer system provides service to an estimated population of 155,000. This includes residents inside and outside of the Cedar Rapids City limits.

Entities served by the system include Cedar Rapids, Marion, Hiawatha, Robins, a portion of Fairfax, and a small portion of customers in Linn County.

Service lines from the connection to the main to the building are the responsibility of property owners. In a few cases, there are sewer mains that are privately owned and maintained.
