Fall Leaf Vacuum Collection Begins October 1
View the leaf collection schedule. Starting Monday, October 1, the Cedar Rapids Solid Waste and Recycling Division will begin operating leaf vacuum trucks. The trucks will run through Thursday, December 6. Residents can expect leaf collection every-other week on a schedule based upon the quadrant they live in.
Leaf collection in the southeast and northeast quadrants will start on Mondays in alternating weeks. Leaf collection in the southwest and northwest quadrants will start on Wednesdays in alternating weeks.
Leaf collection schedules were sent with Cedar Rapids Utilities bills, in the August edition of the Our CR magazine, and a calendar is also available online to help customers identify when their leaves will be collected. Customers can also call the Solid Waste & Recycling Division at (319) 286-5897 to determine their collection day. To ensure residents always know when leaves will be collected, all customers are encouraged to sign up for garbage and recycling text or email alerts from CRNewsNow.
Residents should have their leaves raked next to the street — in the grass area — in front of their homes by 7 a.m. on the respective Monday or Wednesday of their collection period.
Leaves throughout the city tend to fall at the same time, creating large volumes of leaves in areas of the city with mature trees. With the 2018 bi-weekly schedule, Fridays and Saturdays will be used as make-up days if heavy leaf volumes cannot be collected as scheduled. Crews will finish collecting leaves in each quadrant before moving onto the next. If weather or leaf volume slows service, the Cedar Rapids Solid Waste and Recycling Division will strive to reach any missed properties by Wednesday (for quadrants with collection beginning Mondays) or Saturday (for quadrants with collection beginning Wednesdays).
Leaves must be kept out of the street and away from obstacles like mailboxes, signs, poles and trees. The vacuum truck will not collect leaves from alleys. Leaf piles should be free from brush and debris. Sticks and twigs can be placed in the YARDY cart for collection and litter should be bagged and placed in your garbage can. Please do not park cars in front of leaf piles; the truck will not be able to collect the leaves. For more information about the Solid Waste & Recycling Division’s yard waste collection program, visit CityofCR.com/leaf or call (319) 286-5897.
