Violent Crime Down Nearly 13 Percent in First Half of 2018

Violent crime in Cedar Rapids is down nearly 13 percent in the first half of 2018 compared to the same period in 2017.

There were 151 violent crimes in the first six months of 2018 compared to 173 violent crimes in 2017 during the first six months.

Historically, the number of Part 1 Violent Crimes, including aggravated assaults, murder, robbery, and sexual assaults, have dropped from 392 cases in 2013 to 358 cases in 2017.  This is a decrease of 8.7 percent.

According to Police Chief Wayne Jerman, “There are likely a number of factors that are driving the violent crime rate downward, including community involvement, significant arrests of violent offenders, partnerships with other law enforcement agencies, working with prosecutors at both the local and federal level to hold violent offenders accountable, and crime prevention.”

Property crimes declined slightly compared to last year.  These crimes include auto theft, burglary, identity, and other financial thefts.

City Manager Jeff Pomeranz said, “The continued downward trend in the violent crime rate is a testament to citizens and organizations working with our police officers to make sure that our community is safe.   To enhance cooperation between law enforcement, social service agencies, and community groups, the City formed a Police Community Action Team in 2016 to engage citizens and address concerns about violence.  We are achieving positive results because of the sustained efforts of our dedicated, professional police officers building trust and relationships with the community.  I am confident that we will continue to meet any challenges in the future as long as we continue to strengthen relationships achieved through community policing.”
