Collins Road Project Underway

Work has started on the Collins Road improvement project, which supports the goal of adding traffic capacity to the city’s busiest corridor.

The project will include adding travel lanes in each direction between Twixt Town Road and just east of Northland Avenue NE. Additional turn lanes will also be installed at the Lindale Mall and Collins Crossing intersections.

Project Details

  • Area: Collins Road NE, from just east of Northland Avenue to Twixt Town Road
  • Years of Construction: Spring 2018 – 2019
  • Construction cost: $7.4 million, City-funded portion of the project is 24%

  • Additional travel lanes on Collins Road (three in each direction)
  • Additional turn lanes at the Lindale Mall / Collins Crossing intersections
  • New sidewalk on both sides of Collins Road
  • New traffic signals with pedestrian indications/push buttons
  • Stormwater management treatment
  • Frontage road north of Collins Road will be removed to accommodate the additional travel lanes on Collins Road

“Collins Road carries approximately 25,000 vehicles a day, which often results in significant congestion and delays,” says Capital Improvement Program Manager Brenna Fall. “This project continues the capacity improvements we’ve already completed between 1st Avenue and Twixt Town Road, and we are excited to continue these efforts heading west. The long-term goal is to add capacity improvements all the way to Center Point Road.”

Traffic Control
During the course of construction, lane closures will be in effect. Business access will remain open during the duration of the project. In addition, lane restrictions will not take place during the busy holiday shopping season between November 1 and December 31. The project is scheduled to be completed during the 2019 construction season.
