Additional Details on Fatal Crash on Interstate 380

The Cedar Rapids Police Department received multiple calls about a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of U.S. Interstate 380 around 33rd Avenue SW at 9:10 p.m. last evening.  Officers responded to attempt to locate the vehicle and found a multiple vehicle accident that had occurred in the northbound lanes of I-380 between 76th Avenue SW and Wright Brothers Boulevard SW.

The collision involved a 2007 Toyota Prius that was reportedly driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-380.  The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Robert King Norton, Jr., DOB/10-14-1948, age 69, of Iowa City.  Norton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Based upon the accident investigation at this time, Norton’s vehicle collided with a 2008 Volvo S40 that was driven by Jennifer Rae Koenighain, DOB/10-16-1989, age 28, of Cedar Rapids.  Koenighain was also pronounced dead at the scene.

A third vehicle, a 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, was also involved in the collision.  The two occupants of that vehicle were travelling northbound on I-380 and sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. 

The accident remains under investigation.
