Traffic Enforcement Project to Focus on Seat Belt Usage

Traffic Enforcement Project to Focus on Seat Belt Usage

The Cedar Rapids Police Department will be participating in a stepped up law enforcement project from May 22 – June 4, 2017, that focuses on seat belt usage.  The Police Department receives funding from the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau for traffic enforcement projects aimed at eliminating traffic fatalities in Cedar Rapids.

There was one Memorial Day weekend traffic fatality in Iowa last year.  However, in 2009 there were 11 fatalities and there were 9 deaths in 2012.  Law enforcement agencies throughout the state are hoping that there will be zero fatalities during this period before and after the Memorial Day holiday.

Seat belts are the single most effective way to survive in a crash.  Iowa’s seat belt usage rate of 94 percent is one of the highest in the nation but the remaining six percent of vehicle occupants account for approximately half of all traffic fatalities.
