River Recreation Feasibility Study

The goal of this project is to determine the best river recreation opportunities for Cedar Rapids and create a successful plan for implementation. This study will build on the community’s interest and feedback already outlined in the Greenways plan, and determine more specifically river reaction options that would be feasible and safe, while also being compatible with the City’s Flood Control System.

Public Input

Between January 21 and February 14, 2020 nearly 1,500 residents shared their thoughts and ideas on future river recreation opportunities.
SURVEY RESULTS

The Methodology

Crane Associates, River Restoration, and Anderson Bogert are performing the analysis. The study will cover the stretch of Cedar River that goes through Cedar Rapids, including both the 5-in-1-dam and the low head dam south of Prairie Park Fishery. It will also take into consideration river recreation both upstream and downstream of any proposed improvements.

This project will involve technical analysis of hydrology, dams, and other river conditions, along with economic impact analysis for river recreation amenities to develop several feasible options for river recreation amenities.
