1870-1890: A new bridge over the Cedar River at Third Avenue opened in 1871 and was the only location to cross the river downtown until 1884. During that time, commercial storefronts were built in the 100 block of Third Avenue west and along First Street West between 3rd Avenue and First Avenue West.
