1890-1905: The first six story building in Cedar Rapids went up at the corner of Third Avenue and Third Street SE. There was a lot of excitement over this, the tallest building in town, the city’s first “skyscraper” and only the second structure to have elevators. It was built for the Cedar Rapids Savings Bank and although this six story building was 120 feet wide on Third Street SE, it was initially only 40 feet wide on Third Avenue SE, giving the structure an unusual narrow appearance when looking at it from across Third Avenue SE.
