1890-1905:  In 1895, on this corner of Second Avenue and Third Street SE, a large new Federal Government Post Office and Courthouse was constructed here. It was the first permanent Post Office facility for Cedar Rapids. It was of Romanesque design and featured a large squared tower. Another major structure built on this side of the block during this time period was the three story Muskwaki Building at the corner of Second Avenue and the railroad tracks. Opened in 1897, it was originally an office building with three retail spaces on the Second Avenue street level.  The Muskwaki Building still stands today and was known as the home of the Dragon Chinese Restaurant from 1948 to 2002.
