1905-1920: Kosek’s Bakery at 73 16th Avenue SW is shown here just before 1910. By 1915, Bohemian (Czech) immigrants dominated the ownership of buildings and shops along 16th Avenue SW between the Cedar River and C Street SW. More and more commercial store buildings were replacing houses along this two block stretch of what was called “The Avenue”. Several bakeries operated in this area in the early 1900’s, many offering traditional Bohemian pastries such as kolaches, using “Old World” (European) recipes. Kosek’s Bakery evolved into the Sykora Bakery, which today still utilizes the same buildings seen in this photo.
