Loc11A

1920-1935: An entertainment center for this block first opened in 1912 at 1124 Third Street SE. The Olympic Theatre was built by the Scolaro family of Cedar Rapids and was the largest of three movie theatres in this neighborhood between 1912 and 1920. Before the late 1930’s, the Olympic Theatre name was changed three times: it was known as the Sun, Granada and then the Strand movie theatre.  Next door to the theatre at the corner of 12th Avenue and 3rd St. SE was the popular Fencl’s drugstore featuring ice cream sodas.
