1870-1890: Almost immediately, more houses were built and small commercial storefronts began to appear. A high percentage of the new residents of this area were of Czech, or Bohemian descent and the area soon became known as the South End or South Side. To accommodate all the new construction, a large lumberyard was established at the corner of Third Street and 11th Avenue SE.
