Relief Water Plant Operator (Full-time)

The City of Cedar Rapids is currently recruiting for a Relief Water Plant Operator. This position is part of a team that is responsible for 24 hour a day seven days a week coverage. Employees generally work eight hour swing shifts and cover for other operators who are on vacation or otherwise unavailable for work.

This position requires knowledge of:

  • Procedures, methods and techniques required for the operation of a treatment and pumping process under optimum operating conditions and for maintenance and emergency actions.
  • Computer systems and their application for process control and records maintenance
  • Safety practices and standards.

    • This position requires the ability to:


    • Perform confined space entry, CPR, First Aid, AED etc
    • Function as an effective member of a team in the safe and efficient operation of a water system
    • Work under general supervision and exercise discretionary control over treatment procedures
    • Read and write and understand the specialized vocabulary of water treatment and distribution systems
    • Use the tools and equipment associated with a water treatment plant and distribution system, including the following: computer, calculator, hand tools, laboratory equipment, personal protective equipment, gas detectors, fall protection equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus
    • Attend meetings, conferences, training and seminars
    • Operate a personal computer program applications appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities
    • Work cooperatively and to maintain effective working relationships to accomplish job responsibilities
    • Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology
    • Understand and comply with IDNR and Departmental permits, rules, regulations, policy and directives.


      • This position requires possession of an Iowa Grade I Water Treatment Operator Certification within six months of appointment.

      Salary is based on experience and education, the current range is $16.70 to $20.65 per hour.
