Intern (Unpaid) - City Manager's Office
The City of Cedar Rapids is currently recruiting for an Intern (Unpaid) in the City Manager’s Office. This position provides part-time communications and public affairs support to the City Manager’s Office. The work involves general administrative support, independent research on assigned projects, assisting in the development of effective communications systems to build public involvement in projects, and meeting coordination assistance. The work schedule for this position is 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, flexible schedule.

This position requires:
- Working knowledge, background, or interest in public management, organizational and administrative theories, and current practices in municipal government
- Some knowledge of the current practices of all forms of media as they relate to City Government
- Some knowledge of the legislative process at both the City and State levels
- Some knowledge of communications and public relations theories and current practices
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel and Access
- Ability to write effectively in order to prepare communications and presentations
- Ability to prepare accurate and reliable reports on community responses on various issues, etc.
- Ability to operate a personal computer using program applications appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities
- Ability to maintain positive and effective customer relations when working with the general public, volunteers, boards and commissions, and City staff
- Ability to work cooperatively and to maintain effective working relationships to accomplish job responsibilities
- Ability to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology
- Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks
Job duties for this position include (but are not limited to):
- Performs independent project research and develops executive summaries on other city activities and other information as requested by the City Manager
- Attends public meetings and events including City Council meetings and other unique observation and staff support activities
- Assists with public event planning, development, and execution in support of the City Manager’s official activities
- Assists with the implementation of communication on the City’s behalf including letters and e-mails
- Assists with coordinating planning and execution details of periodic events involving the City staff, including external and internal contacts
- Assists with the review and updating of all city communications to reflect consistent message and branding
- Provides ongoing feedback and suggestions on the communication process with internal and external city customers
- Assists in developing a more comprehensive system in communicating to the public, boards, commissioners, people interested in topic areas or wanting to be involved in certain issues
- Assists in the review of possible candidates for Boards and Commissions openings
- Prepares packets for various city meetings including City Council Agenda Planning when scheduling allows
- Answers phone and receives visitors to the department; provides general information and assistance or directs them to the appropriate party
- Monitors and assembles information for award applications for city events and projects through the City of Cedar Rapids involvement in various professional organizations
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures and safety practices
- Attends work regularly at the designated place and time
Required Experience:
Junior or Senior College-level coursework in communications, public relations, political science, economics, liberal arts associated with government relations, or closely related fields; and
Prefer school and/or work experience that demonstrates ability to prepare effective research materials, communication pieces, and ability to organize and represent the organization for sponsored events.
