The City street system includes over 1,450 lane miles on 620 miles of roads. Roughly one-third of the roads are considered to be main arterials, minor arterials or collector streets. The Street Program staff, consisting of over 75 full-time employees, has responsibility for routine and minor corrective maintenance for the City street system. Major reconstruction and rehabilitation of the system is done through Capital Improvement Projects, designed and program-managed by the Public Works Engineering Division and constructed through the Public Works Construction Management Division.
Responsibilities of the Street Program include:
Snow and Ice control:
· Annual use of chemicals including approximately 8,000-9,000 tons of salt and 80,000+ gallons of brine for anti-ice and pre-treatment
· Goal: 100+ staff members (from multiple programs) in 90+ vehicles have a goal of snow clearance in 12 hours or less for major storms, including enforcement of the sidewalk snow removal code
· Crews average seven City-wide plows for major storms and 15-20 responses for minor storms during the snow season
Roadside Vegetation Control
· Mowing 865+ City-owned acres
· Mowing 1,000+ properties acquired post-flood
· Spraying of medians for vegetation control
· Enforcement of the mowing/noxious weed code
· Crews average four mowing rotations starting in late April through late October
Emergency and Environmental Response
· Installation of temporary flood mitigation measures, assistance during tree emergencies, street sweeping, dust control, and storm drainage
· Crews averages three sweeping rotations starting in early March through October
Street Maintenance
· Pothole patching, crack sealing, shoulder repair and road/alley grading, mudjacking, sealcoating, point repairs in asphalt and concrete and minor asphalt overlays.
· Annually, crews fill over 170,000 potholes, seal 110 miles of cracks with sealant, apply roughly 13-15 miles of seal coat, and pour the equivalent of nearly 1.5 lane miles of concrete in over 50 spot repair locations
