Yes, the department provides Fingerprinting Services on Thursdays from 9:00 AM to Noon. This service is provided on a walk-in basis, subject to the availability of Crime Scene Unit personnel.

3. I received an obscene/harassing phone call. What should I do?

The Police Department will take a report for phone harassment after three calls are successfully traced.
To have a call traced:

  • Hang up on the caller.
  • Get a dial tone and then dial *57.
  • If the trace is successful, you will receive a recording advising you that the call was traced and a fee will be charged to your bill. If you do not get this recording, call the phone company and request that a manual trace be put on your line.

After three successful traces, call (319) 286-5350 to report the harassment. Your report will then be forwarded to the Investigative Division for further investigation.

4. What is the procedure if I receive a bad check?

The Linn County Attorney has stated that he will prosecute true name checks with the following limitations:

  • No out of state checks
  • No two party checks
  • US Treasury checks will be prosecuted by the US Secret Service

The following prerequisites must be met before checks are submitted for prosecution:

  • Identification with a photograph must be checked and noted, preferably on the face of the check.
  • The False Check and Forgery Report must be filled out completely, listing the home address and home telephone number of the person reporting the check, and the home address and home telephone number of the person who accepted the check.
  • The check cannot have been "Post-Dated" or have been a payment on an ongoing account. There cannot have been an agreement to hold the check.
  • Proof of Notification, with a signed receipt, must be included with the check at the time it is turned in for prosecution. A waiting period of ten days must have expired between the date of notification and the date the check is turned in for prosecution. A Sheriff's Department Proof of Personal Service is considered Proof of Notification. It must be attached with the check following the required ten day waiting period.
  • Proof of Notification is a certified letter with restricted delivery to only the person who wrote the check and a return receipt from the Post Office. If the Post Office cannot deliver the certified letter or it is not claimed, then a Personal Service must be attempted through the Sheriff's Department, or service can be made in person by the victim with a witness present.
