     NEW LANDLORD LICENSE & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
All Landlords must apply for a landlord license and re-register all of their residential rental properties within the city limits. Please see below-instructions to send in license and registration. A $1,000 penalty may now be applied for landlord licenses and property registrations.  If you have any questions feel free to give us a call at (319) 286-5197 or stop by our office.

The Housing Inspections division of Building Services is responsible for inspections of all residential rental properties within the City of Cedar Rapids limits only-as well as rental property complaints. The properties are checked for proper registration and compliance of the City of Cedar Rapids Housing Code and International Property Maintenance Code. This ensures the housing facilities and conditions are of the quality necessary to protect and promote health, safety and welfare of those person utilizing the housing and the general public as well.

Rental Registration

The City’s housing code requires owners of rental property to register their property with the Housing Inspection division within 30 days of transfer of title or possession of such property.  All properties that are not occupied by the owner are considered rental-even if rent is not paid. 

Instructions to send: 

  • Landlord License Form
  • Registration Form (SFD/Duplex and/or Multiple-3 or more units)   
  • Check payable to City Treasurer (One-time Landlord License Fee-$50 and regis fee-$30/SFD & Duplex; $25 -Multiple Structure-3 or more units +$8/unit).  See Fees for more detail.
