Participation in the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program provides golf course superintendents with information resources and support as they manage the golf course in a way that is beneficial to both the golfers and the wildlife that share the green space that the golf course provides to the community. Golf and the environment share a unique relationship and the environmental stewardship efforts of the golf course superintendent enhance both the game and the setting in which it is played.
Out-of-play areas are managed in a way that is suitable for the wildlife that consider Twin Pines home. The reduced mowing in out-of-play areas enhances wildlife habitat and provides more food, cover, and shelter.
The wild flower displays throughout the golf course add to the beauty of the landscape and attract butterflies and birds that feed on the nectar and seeds. The Bluebird houses that have been maintained at Twin Pines have increased the number of Bluebirds seen at the golf course. Over 120 Bluebirds have been fledged at Twin Pines since the nest boxes were installed. Water quality is also monitored on a regular basis and the areas around ponds are managed to maintain water quality. We hope that the increased wildlife habitat at Twin Pines will ultimately add to the enjoyment of your round of golf.
Jeff Schmidt is available to speak with schools, small groups, and superintendents' associations about the commitment of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. Please feel free to call him at (319) 286-5596.
