Gardner Golf Course:
CERTIFIED AUDUBON COOPERATIVE SANCTUARY

Donald K. Gardner Memorial Golf Course has achieved designation as a "Certified Audubon Sanctuary" by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System, the educational division of Audubon International in January 2003. Dave Roe is the Superintendent at Gardner Golf Course along with Keith Furne, the Golf Course Assistant. Donald K. Gardner Memorial Golf Course is the seventh course in Iowa and the 423rd in the world to receive this honor.

"Donald K. Gardner Memorial has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property." said Peter Bronski, Staff Ecologist for the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System.

"To reach certification, a course must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas," explained Bronski. These categories include: Environmental Planning, Wildlife and Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.

Many times while playing golf, one will see wild turkey, deer, and other species wandering the course. This is not your typical golf course of years gone by. By obtaining this recognition, Dave Roe and his staff have proven that the environment does indeed play a very integral part of our lives and he is committed to keeping it a viable place for nature to thrive.

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, and Southeast Asia have also achieved certification in the program.

In addition to golf courses, the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System also provides programs for schools, individuals, and businesses.
